But what impressed me most was the abbey rising at its center. Its architecture reminded me of old English cathedrals and castles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"781\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bec Abbey<\/span><\/span> was founded in 1034 by the Norman knight Herluin, who left military life to create a monastery in the peaceful Bec valley. Over time, it became one of the most important religious and intellectual centers in medieval Normandy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"1126\">Its influence reached far beyond France after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Several abbots later became Archbishops of Canterbury, creating lasting ties between Normandy and England \u2014 one reason the atmosphere here can feel strikingly English. During the Middle Ages, scholars, monks, and pilgrims traveled here from across Europe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1428\">Despite wars and periods of decline, especially during the French Revolution, the village has preserved much of its historic character. Today, it is officially listed among <em data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1336\">Les Plus Beaux Villages de France<\/em> and remains known for its peaceful beauty, spiritual heritage, and timeless Norman charm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1643\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">This journal is a collection of those moments \u2014 quiet corners and atmospheres discovered through photography in one of Normandy\u2019s most peaceful villages.
