The first glimpse of the immense Gothic abbey rising above the landscape was unforgettable. Even before entering the narrow medieval streets, there was a strong sense of history in the air. The abbey\u2019s stone walls dominate the village from above, creating an immediate feeling of awe. Founded in the 11th century, it later developed into the striking Gothic monument that still defines the village today.<\/p>\n

Walking through Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye felt like stepping gently into another century. Stone houses, hidden courtyards, cobbled lanes, and silent passageways all seem to hold the memory of pilgrims, monks, and travelers who once came here from across Europe. I naturally slowed down, drawn to the textures of the old stone and the soft light moving through the streets.<\/p>\n

From the 12th century onward, the abbey became one of medieval Europe\u2019s major pilgrimage sites after the relics of Saint Anthony the Great were brought here. It welcomed those seeking healing from the mysterious \u201cSaint Anthony\u2019s Fire,\u201d becoming a place of refuge and hope.<\/p>\n

The village also carries a living spiritual tradition today, with monastic guesthouses and retreat spaces where visitors can stay overnight, take part in quiet reflection, and join diverse activities \u2014 continuing the centuries-old hospitality that once welcomed pilgrims on their journey. One of these places is L\u2019Arche de Saint-Antoine<\/strong>, a community and retreat house just next to the abbey entrance, offering stays, workshops, and communal life inspired by non-violence, simplicity, and shared living.
